Criterion To Release NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD on Blu-ray!
By the time you read this, it is already being geeked about all over the net, but for those of you not on Facebook and message boards 24/7, The Criterion Collection will be releasing George Romero’s NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD on Blu-ray on February 13, 2018. Shot outside Pittsburgh on a shoestring budget by a band of filmmakers determined to make their mark, the film is one of the great stories of independent cinema: a midnight hit turned box-office smash that became one of the most influential films of all time. A deceptively simple tale of a group of strangers trapped in a farmhouse who find themselves fending off a horde of recently dead, flesh-eating ghouls, Romero’s claustrophobic vision of a late-1960s America literally tearing itself apart rewrote the rules of the horror genre, combined gruesome gore with acute social commentary, and quietly broke ground by casting a black actor (Duane Jones) in its lead role. Stark, haunting, and more relevant than ever, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD is back, in a new 4K restoration supervised by director George A. Romero, co-screenwriter John A. Russo, sound engineer Gary R. Streiner, and producer Russell W. Streiner. Details: New restoration of the monaural soundtrack, supervised by Romero and Gary R. Streiner, and presented uncompressed on the Blu-ray; “Night of Anubis”, a never-before-presented work-print edit of the film; New program featuring filmmakers Frank Darabont, Guillermo del Toro, and Robert Rodriguez; Never-before-seen 16 mm dailies reel; New piece featuring Russo about the commercial and industrial-film production company where key NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD filmmakers got their start; Two audio commentaries from 1994, featuring Romero, Russo, producer Karl Hardman, actor Judith O’Dea, and more; Archival interviews with Romero and actors Duane Jones and Judith Ridley; New programs about the editing, the score, and directing ghouls; New interviews with Gary R. Streiner and Russel W. Streiner; Trailer, radio spots, and TV spots and more! PLUS: An essay by critic Stuart Klawans.

Now the lone descendant of this grisly tribe has surfaced, prowling the streets for fresh victims… and a new mate. Severin Films To Release BLACKENSTEIN On Blu-ray!
On May 30th, Severin Films, in association with Xenon Pictures and Vinegar Syndrome, invites you to experience Mary Shelley's horror classic through a Vietnam-shattered, micro-budget, entrail-smothered lens. After years of lifeless home video presentations, Severin is proud to re-animate BLACKENSTEIN with an immaculate transfer of the rarely seen original theatrical cut AND a new assembly of the home video release version, Frankensteined together from the best existing elements! (The home video version has been the most widely seen version over the past few decades. It's entirely possible that the original video master was created using a longer, unfinished cut of the movie, with the producer's tighter edit being the version that was officially released to cinemas in the 1970s) You may have heard of this infamous Blaxploitation/Horror hybrid, but the real story is even more bizarre: In 1973, criminal-lawyer-turned-wannabe-monster-movie-mogul Frank R. Saletri wrote and produced this grindhouse hit about a Black soldier mortally wounded in Vietnam transformed into a rampaging monster by an L.A. mad scientist. Almost a decade later, Saletri himself would be murdered gangland-style in a crime that remains debated – and unsolved – to this day. John Hart (TV’s “The Lone Ranger”), ‘40s Hollywood starlet Andrea King and even former mob moll/stripper Liz Renay star in this jaw-dropper directed by William A. Levey, now with all-new Special Features that spotlight the entire twisted saga! Special Features: *Theatrical Release Version (78 Mins.) and Video Release Version (87 Mins.); *Monster Kid: Interview with Writer / Producer Frank R. Saletri’s Sister, June Kirk; *Archive News Broadcast On The Murder Of Writer/Producer Frank R. Saletri; *Producer/Directors/Actors Ken Osborne And Robert Dix Remember Writer/Producer Frank R. Saletri; *Bill Created Blackenstein: Interview With Creature Designer Bill Munns; *Theatrical Trailer.

Shot in Philadelphia in 1962, THE DISMEMBERED claws its way out of the grave of cinematic obscurity to debut on home video for the very first time courtesy of a new HD Blu-ray from Garagehouse Pictures. THE DISMEMBERED is a film so forgotten that at the time of this writing it doesn’t even have a listing on the Internet Movie Database. Directed by Ralph S. Hirshorn, THE DISMEMBERED is an offbeat ghosts-and-gangsters satire that evokes the spirit of American International Pictures and the drive-in B movie. Featuring homicidal ghosts, creeping severed limbs, cobwebbed sets, graveyard atmosphere and weird musical improvisations by the Main Street Ghouls, THE DISMEMBERED is one strange little movie with lots of ghoulish charm. The Blu-ray will be available April 25th from Garagehouse Pictures. Specs are as follows: • Transferred & digitally mastered in 4K from the director’s only 16mm film print, • Sound digitally remastered from the original optical tracks, • Audio commentary with director Ralph S. Mondo Macabro To Release Joseph Larraz's SYMPTOMS!
Mondo Macabro is extremely proud to present for the first time ever on home video a lost classic of Euro-horror cinema, Jose Ramon Larraz’s SYMPTOMS. For years only viewable as a blurry bootleg derived from an early 80s British TV broadcast, now this haunting thriller can be seen as it was intended with a brand new HD transfer of the recently discovered negatives. It’s taken us more than 15 years of searching and negotiating to get here, but with the indispensable assistance of the BFI we can finally bring this film to the world on Blu-ray and DVD. SYMPTOMS is an intense and claustrophobic study of a woman’s descent into madness and murder. Made in the same years as Larraz’s better known VAMPYRES with much of the same crew and a similar vibe, SYMPTOMS is more atmospheric and ambiguous, and less exploitative. But it casts a powerful spell and is perhaps the most potent example of director Jose Larraz’s unique style. (READ MORE)

Book Review: Fright Night on Channel 9!
From 1973 to 1987, Fright Night was a fixture of the late Saturday evening schedule on independent New York television station WOR-TV. A genre fan's nightmare come true, the modestly produced showcase featured horror films both classic and obscure. Fright Night suffered no delusions ofgrandeur, and never claimed to be anything more than what it was: great entertainment on a Saturday night. This affectionate tribute to Fright Night's glory days includes a complete listing of all films shown on the series, as well as discussion of WOR-TV's other horror movie programs from the 1970s and 1980s. Read our review of Fright Night on Channel 9 HERE.
"Drive-In Movie" Article!
During the 1980s, one of the most exciting and influential movie experiences to ever hit Saturday afternoon television was Drive-In Movie on WNEW channel 5 in New York. The programming was unbeatable: motorcycle movies, teen sex comedies, Japanese giant monster epics, Hammer horror films, AIP classics and, most importantly, kung fu movies. Lots and lots of kung fu movies. Chris Poggiali gives us the full story -- as well as complete listings -- of one of the first programs to drag Chinese kung fu flicks out of the grindhouses and into the living rooms of mainstream America!
