Olive to Release IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE on Blu-Ray (in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio)!
This news has been floating around the internet for days so you might have already read about it, but we wanted to wait until we got an official press release from Olive Films so we could present you accurate information. On May 19, Olive will be releasing the 1958 sci-fi classic IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE on Blu-ray and DVD. Following a rescue mission to Mars, the survivor of a space expedition claims that his crew was hunted down and killed by an alien creature. Skeptical, and believing that the survivor may have killed the crew in order to survive, the rescue captain dismisses the explanation only to find that a Martian creature has stowed away on the spacecraft and begins to hunt the human hosts. Directed by Edward L. Cahn, the film stars Marshall Thompson (FIEND WITHOUT A FACE), Shirley Patterson (THE LAND UNKNOWN), Kim Spalding (THE GUNFIGHTER), Dabbs Greer (HOUSE OF WAX) and Ray “Crash” Corrigan (THE APE) as “It”. Olive’s press release incorrectly lists the film as being in the 1.37:1 aspect ratio; since the MGM HD master that Olive is using is 1.85:1, that’s actually the correct aspect ratio it will be presented in. The Blu-ray retails for $29.95 and the DVD $24.95.

Unfortunately, we've been unsuccessful at clearing the rights to Peter Knight's original score. Therefore, if and when we reschedule the release, it will be accompanied by Kendall Schmidt's 1980s-era score. On October 14, Olive Films will release CAULDRON OF BLOOD (aka "Blind Man’s Bluff") on both Blu-ray and DVD. Starring legendary horror icon Boris Karloff and Viveca Lindfors, the film presents a clever twist on the sculptor/murderer theme that runs throughout horror film history. Karloff stars as blind artist Franz Badulescu, who creates startlingly lifelike statues with the help of his protective daughter, Viveca Lindfors (CREEPSHOW). Jean-Pierre Aumont (DAY FOR NIGHT) co-stars as a jet-setting photographer sent to photograph the reclusive artist at his Spanish castle, but unearths a horrible secret at the core of Badulescu’s haunting sculptures. Plotted like an Italian giallo, seasoned with American jazz and bursts of psychedelia, CAULDRON OF will be presented in a 1.78:1 aspect ratio, with a running time of 99 minutes.

Murnau’s 1922 classic, Herzog eschews the popular conception of the vampire as confident and alluring, and instead focuses on the tragedy of the creature: doomed to immortality, weary, and disgusted at his own existence. A must for both cinephiles and horror-fans alike, the award-winning film makes its Blu-ray debut on May 20th, 2014 from Scream Factory/Shout! Factory. Starring Klaus Kinski, Isabelle Adjani and Bruno Ganz, NOSFERATU THE VAMPYRE comes loaded with extras, including two audio commentaries with Werner Herzog (one in German with English subtitles), a vintage featurette on the making of Nosferatu, theatrical trailers, as well as both German and English versions of the film.

Book Review: Fright Night on Channel 9!
From 1973 to 1987, Fright Night was a fixture of the late Saturday evening schedule on independent New York television station WOR-TV. Fright Night suffered no delusions of grandeur, and never claimed to be anything more than what it was: great entertainment on a Saturday night. This affectionate tribute to Fright Night's glory days includes a complete listing of all films shown on the series, as well as discussion of WOR-TV's other horror movie programs from the 1970s and 1980s. Read our review of Fright Night on Channel 9 HERE.
"Drive-In Movie" Article!
During the 1980s, one of the most exciting and influential movie experiences to ever hit Saturday afternoon television was Drive-In Movie on WNEW channel 5 in New York. The programming was unbeatable: motorcycle movies, teen sex comedies, Japanese giant monster epics, Hammer horror films, AIP classics and, most importantly, kung fu movies. Lots and lots of kung fu movies. Chris Poggiali gives us the full story -- as well as complete listings -- of one of the first programs to drag Chinese kung fu flicks out of the grindhouses and into the living rooms of mainstream America!
