Much like last year, MGM currently has nothing significant planned for classic Halloween DVD releases this year. That means that the Midnite Movies are still on hiatus and their unreleased cult films from American International Pictures, Hammer Films and United Artists are still being untapped despite many new transfers and restorations being done. If you are interested in these films on DVD, please check out our umpteenth "Midnite Movies" campaign HERE.

Directed by Fred Dekker (THE MONSTER SQUAD), this 1980s zombie campfest has been one of our most asked about titles over the years. To vote for the cover you like best, click HERE but do it before July 12!

Code Red Unleashes THE STRANGENESS!

On August 18th, Code Red DVD will unleash THE STRANGENESS! It is 1980 and the price of gold is soaring. Old timers warn would be prospectors to stay away from the Gold Spike Mine. It has stood as a ghastly reminder of the horrors of a century before when the earth violently shook and over twenty miners were killed, their bodies stripped of flesh. The residents of Basin City talked of the grisly murders only in whispers from which legends of The Strangeness grew. A small group of explorers innocently make their way to the Gold Spike. Only one knows the incredible secret of the mine, and here the nightmare begins.....! NIGHTMARE USA's Stephen Thrower described the film as having, "Ominous atmosphere, flashes of humour, and a truly startling monster!" Shot in 16mm, Code Red presents the film in 16x9 widescreen (as requested by the director) from a HiDef master. Extras include 6 short films from Chris Huntley and Mark Sawicki; audio commentary from Sawicki, Huntley, and the director; on camera interviews with all three; and an extensive still gallery. MSRP is $22.98.

Karloff and Lugosi Horror Classics!

Horror fans will again be screaming this Halloween when Warner Home Video debuts the “Karloff & Lugosi Horror Classics” on October 6 -- four frightfully fun horror classics all in one collection and on DVD for the first time. Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi, iconic horror actors best known for creating the screen’s original Frankenstein and Dracula characters, star here in other roles in THE WALKING DEAD, FRANKENSTEIN 1970, YOU’LL FIND OUT and ZOMBIES ON BROADWAY. FRANKENSTEIN will include a commentary with Charlotte Austin and Tom Weaver, and THE WALKING DEAD will feature a commentary with Greg Mank. The 2-disc set will be available for $26.98 SRP.

Code Red Makes a Date for THE WEEKEND MURDERS!

On August 11th, THE WEEKEND MURDERS, a 1972 giallo often paired with BLACK BELLY OF THE TARANTULA in the States, will make its DVD debut from Code Red DVD. A large English family meet at the family's estate for the reading of their father's will, and no sooner than the will is read, a series of murders start to take place. Can't be the butler, as he was the first victim! Directed by Michele Lupo, the films stars Opera legend Anna Moffo, plus Peter Baldwin (THE GHOST), Eveline Stewart (KILL BABY KILL), Gaston Moschin (GODFATHER 2), British comedian Lance Percival and Giacomo Rossi-Stuart (THE NIGHT EVELYN CAME OUT OF THE GRAVE). Code Red is proud to present the film for the first time anywhere in widescreen, from a HiDef master. Extras include an audio commentary with star Peter Baldwin and HOSTEL producer Scott Spiegel, as well as an on camera interview with Baldwin, original U.S trailer and still a gallery. MSRP is $24.98.

A STUDY IN TERROR Coming to DVD!

On November 11, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release on DVD the classic 1966 British suspense thriller A STUDY IN TERROR. Jack the Ripper is terrorizing London in the late 1800s and the only man capable of solving the insidious crimes is the master mind super-sleuth, Sherlock Holmes. A fan favorite and long-awaited on DVD, the film stars John Neville, Donald Houston, Anthony Quayle, Barbara Windsor, Adrienne Corri and Robert Morley. Executive produced by Herman Cohen (BERSERK, TROG) and directed by James Hill. The DVD will retail for $19.95 but will be available for less from various online outlets.

DRACULA A.D. 1972 - Now a Groovy Soundtrack CD!

Criterion To Release Polanski's Horror Classic!

On July 28, The Criterion Collection will release Roman Polanski’s 1965 thriller REPULSION on DVD and Blu-ray. Roman Polanski followed up his international breakthrough KNIFE IN THE WATER with this controversial, chilling tale of psychosis, starring Catherine Deneuve as Carol, a fragile, frigid young beauty cracking up over the course of a terrifying weekend. Left alone by her vacationing sister in their London flat, Carol is haunted by specters real and imagined, and her insanity grows to a violent pitch. Thanks to its unforgettable attention to disturbing detail and Polanski’s unparalleled adeptness at turning claustrophobic space into an emotional minefield, REPULSION remains one of cinema’s most shocking psychological thrillers. Disc Features: a new, restored 1.85:1 high-definition digital transfer (with an uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition); an audio commentary featuring director Roman Polanski and actress Catherine Deneuve; A British Horror Film (2003), a documentary on the making of Repulsion, featuring interviews with Polanski, producer Gene Gutowski, and cinematographer Gil Taylor; A 1964 television documentary filmed on the set of REPULSION featuring rare footage of Polanski and Deneuve at work; a Theatrical trailer and a booklet featuring an essay by film scholar and curator Bill Horrigan. SRP is $39.95.

An innocent camping weekend turns into terror for four young university students when they witness a murder! The film stars Henry Silva (CHAINED HEAT, SHARKEY'S MACHINE) and Nicholas Campbell (DEAD ZONE, THE BROOD). The DVD will feature a brand new 16x9 widescreen master, and the original theatrical trailer. MSRP is 19.98.

COMBAT SHOCK: 2-Disc Director’s Cut

Troma Team Video is proud to present the 2-Disc Never-Before-Seen Director’s Cut of Buddy Giovinazzo’s dark, nihilistic masterwork COMBAT SHOCK. COMBAT SHOCK has remained hidden in the underground video universe for more than 25 years, and has now fully ripened to disgust, revolt and depress a new generation of indie film viewers. Released theatrically in 1986, the film was dismissed mostly by mainstream critics, but scarred the retinas of the indie cult/horror counterculture and is now regarded as one of the supreme classics of 1980s underground cinema. Inspired by true ghastly headlines about tormented war veterans, Giovinazzo centers his story on Frankie Dunlan, a Vietnam veteran whose life is a festering sewer of poverty, hopelessness and violence. THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION DVD Cancelled

We just got word from MVD Entertainment that their May 5 release of the director’s cut of THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION has been cancelled. As we announced this release earlier, we apologize to any fans who were hoping to make this purchase, and if anything changes, we will let you know.

Blue Undergound to Re-Release TORSO,10TH VICTIM!

On July 28, Blue Underground will release the 1973 giallo classic TORSO on DVD. A series of sex murders shock a college campus, and four beautiful young girlfriends head for the safety of an isolated country villa. But as they succumb to their own erotic desires, their weekend of pleasure becomes a vacation to dismember at the hands - and blade - of the lecherous maniac. Directed by Sergio Martino (MOUNTAIN OF THE CANNIBAL GOD) and starring Suzy Kendall (THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE) and Tina Aumont (SALON KITTY), this Euro Horror chiller was originally released in America with much of its controversial violence removed by censors. Fully restored from the original negative materials, TORSO will be presented completely uncut and uncensored on DVD. Presented anamorphic 1.85:1 with both English and Italian language tracks, extras include the international “Carnal Violence” trailer as well as the original U.S. theatrical trailer. On the same date, Blue Underground will also release the 1960s cult classic THE 10TH VICTIM with Marcello Mastroianni and Ursula Andress. Both discs (previously available from Anchor Bay, but long out-of-print) retail for $14.95.

THE WARNER ARCHIVE DVD Collection!

Warner Home Video has just introduced “The Warner Archive,” a selection of rare films available exclusively on DVD through the WBShop.com. These are authorized DVDs transferred from the original masters, and of interest to DVD Drive-In readers are Hammer Films’ CRESCENDO, DOC SAVAGE MAN OF BRONZE, CAPTAIN SINDBAD, MY BLOOD RUNS COLD, BRAINSTORM (1965), CAPTAIN NEMO AND THE UNDERWATER CITY and a number of other titles from various genres. Reportedly, Warner is planning to add even more exclusive titles to this series. To check out The Warner Archive, click HERE.

THE LEGEND OF BLOOD CASTLE Comes To DVD!

On May 19, Mya Communication will release THE LEGEND OF BLOOD CASTLE on DVD. Considered one of the best adaptations of Elizabeth Báthory’s legend, this is a disturbing and chilling movie from Spanish horror cult director Jorge Grau (LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE). Also known as THE FEMALE BUTCHER, the 1973 film concerns Countess Erzsebet Bathory (Lucia Bosé), who is accidentally splattered with the blood drops of one of her nubile maidservants, discovering that the blood can preserve her skin. Compelled to kill innocent young girls to use their blood, the Countess is helped by her husband Karl (Espartaco Santoni), who fakes his own death and pretends to be a vampire to fool the superstitious villagers about the source of the exsanguinations. In the meantime, Karl finds himself attracted to Marina (Ewa Aulin, CANDY), the young daughter of a local innkeeper, perhaps another victim for the Countess. The disc will include a 1.77:1 anamorphic transfer; English, Spanish and Italian mono audio tracks; deleted scenes; alternate scenes; the original Italian opening credits and a still gallery. The SRP is $24.99.

Severin Unearths NIGHTMARE CASTLE Negative!

Gothic horror fans will be delighted to know that Severin Films will be giving the first official DVD release to the 1965 Barbara Steele chiller NIGHTMARE CASTLE/THE FACELESS MONSTER (original title: Amanti d’oltretomba, or “Lovers Beyond The Tomb”). The original negative has recently been discovered in a Rome storage vault and apparently in good condition. Severin will be doing a new HD transfer in its original aspect ratio, so all those super cheap bootleg DVDs taken from 10th generation TV prints can now be discarded forever. The film was directed by Mario Caiano, and Severin recently shot a great interview with the 75 year old master at his home just outside of Rome. NIGHTMARE CASTLE also showcases the very first horror score by the legendary Ennio Morricone, and the beautiful black & white cinematography comes courtesy of Enzo Barboni. A new featurette with Steele will also be included. This uncut, uncensored and unsung hit of Italian horror history will have a street date of May 19 and retail for $19.95.

VCI To Release 1970 Apocalyptic Cult Film!

Once upon a time there were countries, cities, schools, movies, electric appliances, The Beatles, politicians, then… GLEN AND RANDA. On April 28, VCI Entertainment will release the rarely seen 1970 science fiction film, GLEN AND RANDA for the first time on DVD. Independent filmmaker Jim McBride follows a hedonistic, young couple as they roam the post-apocalyptic world in search of a fabled, unspoiled city of dreams. The record of the journey is Glen and Randa, a desperate odyssey by the last survivors of an atomic holocaust, stumbling through the wreckage of a vanished civilization. The upcoming DVD will include a 1.85:1 widescreen anamorphic transfer and include a video interview with director McBride.

Severin Unleashes THE SINFUL DWARF!

Severin Films announced the March 31 release of THE SINFUL DWARF, the infamous 1973 Danish-made/London-lensed shocker that has been called “perhaps the sleaziest film in EuroCult history.” Events surrounding this first ever North American DVD release are scheduled to include a rare theatrical screening at Austin’s Alamo Draft House on March 4th, as well as national protests from various outraged Little People’s organizations. Severin’s restoration of the still-controversial movie was made possible by the recent discovery of a pristine 35mm print found hidden in a janitor’s closet at The Danish Film Institute. (READ MORE)
