BAD GIRLS GO TO HELL (1965)/ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER MAN (1966)
Director: Doris Wishman
Image Entertainment/Something Weird Video

Doris Wishman, the First Lady of sexploitation, has two of her better 60s efforts showcased in this "Drive-In Double Feature" package. Both films run a little over an hour, were shot in black & white, and show plenty of chicks in their underwear. With nice hand-held photography, some rather abstract editing that swiftly resorts to panning up and down on scantily clad gals, and a fondness for female feet, both films are laughable and enjoyable at the same time. And let's not forget those priceless glimpses of mid-60s Manhattan!

BAD GIRLS GO TO HELL features a bored Boston housewife who accidentally kills the homely janitor who tries to rape her (during a bright Saturday morning). Panicking, she takes a bus to New York City and literally descends into hell. There she meets a "nice guy" who gets violent at the drop of the bottle, an adulterating pig whose apartment she borders, and a shapely lesbian who parades around in revealing leotards and nightgowns.

ANOTHER DAY ANOTHER MAN is about a beehived newlywed who's working husband all of a sudden becomes sick and bed-ridden (no explanation, but out of the blue, he has to stay in bed for about half a year). Overcome by medical bills, she decides to become a lady of the night, just as her former roommate did, but the tricks only lead to trouble of course.

Both films were not shot without sync sound, so all of the dialog is post dubbed. Mouths are obscured or the camera focuses on the back of someone's head while lines are being spoke, but when dialog is attempted to be synced with lip movements, you feel like you watching a Japanese monster flick. Both films like to tease, as the nudity is either very brief or skillfully concealed. Even though they're both "adult" in nature, the films are still rather tame by the much less rigid standards that were to arrive by the late 60s.

The transfers on these two black & white films look nice, with little grain and a very smooth appearance, and the source materials are in surprisingly good shape. The best thing about this package is what Image and Something Weird have presented here. The extras can be accessed separately, or if you press "Let's Go To the Drive-In" on the menu, you get a perfectly synchronized drive-in double feature with the works!

It commences with authentic drive-in era "countdowns to show time" and snack bar endorsements (yummy!), followed by some trailers for a number of Wishman films. During the intermission break, we are treated to more of the same, but we also see a famous ad for a pair of sex books for sale in the lobby (you could buy them in privacy by switching on your car's headlights!). At the end of the second feature, we are shown how to properly exit the drive-in, but the whole program concludes with a surprise trailer for Wishman's THE AMAZING TRANSPLANT. The drive-in films and trailers come from the vast Something Weird vaults, and there is a video generated "SWV" stamped in the bottom right corner (obviously to prevent bootlegging) during all of these short attractions.

There is also a vast gallery of exploitation art (taken from varied pressbooks, photos and lobby cards) accompanied by some priceless radio spots for drive-in movies.

Kudos to Image and Something Weird Video for being the first to fully replicate a drive-in double feature on disc, and as editor of "DVD Drive-In," I highly recommend this inventive, one of a kind viewing experience. Let's hope they do it again! (George R. Reis)
